While most children are far more content to listen to fairy tales, stories and poetry than theory about the cosmos, some people would like to be able to explain the events in the universe in simple terms.
Now new research from the University of Oxford may have shown that understanding these processes can lead to children being better able to understand the wider world around them.
The findings are published in the journal Child Development.
Oxford researchers found that a theory about the universe, from which they had personally derived an understanding of the world around them, could help children to become more open to new information.
Children who have developed a theory of the universe about the behaviour of certain things that are present in the world around them -- such as stars or planets -- tend to be more open to learning new information about the natural world.
The results provide one explanation for why children are often far less open to new ideas and information than adults. However, a theory of the universe may not always be the best way for children to acquire such knowledge.
"The theory of the universe is very powerful. It's simple, it's easy to teach, and it's something that we all have a sense of," says Professor Richard Marshall of the University of Oxford's Department of Experimental Psychology, who led the study.

"However, we've shown that this type of understanding can be problematic for young children in that it leads them to lock themselves away from learning about new information.
"Furthermore, it's been suggested that this type of world-theory account may actually teach children to believe that the world around them is largely predictable. This may be bad news for children in terms of how open they are to learning new information about the natural world." be359ba680
